So I just read your recap of Sorbet, and you're thoughts about Franklyn's neediness made me think there must be people on the internet who perceive you in a similar (but hopefully less scary) way. I was wondering if your experiences with your fanbase gave you this insight?

Well—taking a bit from a comment thread on the recap itself—

Well, no, back up. I try to think of people as “my readers” rather than “fans” or “followers,” because I feel like if you, as Someone People Maybe Kind Of Know Of On The Internet, buy into the idea of having ~a fanbase omg~ too deeply, you’re getting into Eventual Norma Desmond territory (“I was ALWAYS big, it was the INTERNETS that got SMAAAALLLLL”). Maybe you’re fortunate enough to have an audience, but they’re there for your work, not your *special snowflake self,* and so it’s more of a continual reciprocity: you write, you write your best, and hopefully people read it, and if you’re lucky people wish you well and keep coming back to read more. I just want to qualify that part of my answer before I continue.

But yeah. That’s basically where that came from. To expand on a comment I made in the discussion afterwards: I was surprised how much sympathy I felt for Franklyn (in an “oh, honey, no, you can do so much better than this” way), because people who very strenuously “just want to be friends” with strangers they’re projecting things onto make me really, really uneasy. Over the last four or five years, I’ve gotten some disturbing emails. You don’t know me, but you’re the only person who understands me, I think you’re the friend that I need, can we talk on the phone, can we talk on Skype, can I come down and meet you in person? I’m trying to be vague and discreet here, but more than one person mentioned having previously thought of suicide, and one person threatened it “if you ever stop writing.” So sometimes I end up sitting there staring at my inbox, like… I don’t know what to do about this. (This is also why Twilight-themed jokes—I hope they were jokes—about wanting to watch me sleep or sniff my hair or lick me or kidnap me tended to not go over well.) I just… I write humor about movies and sometimes books and TV. I am fortunate enough to have readers, wonderful readers. I am so, so glad that the enjoyment of things I’ve written has helped people get through tough times. That means a lot to me. I write things for you to read. I hope those things make your life better or easier or happier in some small way. I can’t personally save you.

And you know? I’ve had the “you are so amazing that I just want to be your friend” feeling. I’ve even had it for long, sustained periods of time—romantic crush, platonic crush, stranger crush, but, by definition, someone you don’t actually know very well. It’s this brilliant limerent ache where you kind of want to die a little every time you think about how you might never even meet this person, or you have met them but if they would just—if you could just—just five minutes more and they would see. You want to be what they need so you can feel good and important and loved—that’s your need. So I include myself in this when I say: “I don’t know you but I just really want to be your best friend, starting right now” always comes down to “I want you to make me feel good about myself.” You get an email like some of the emails I’ve gotten and you don’t even feel like it’s addressed to you; it’s just need in the shape of words and those words could be talking about anyone. And whenever I’ve felt it, I’ve just known better than to say anything or believe in the realness of it, because I know how it feels from both sides. And that kind of infatuation-need always passes. Sometimes it takes years, but it passes—it reappears, it takes on someone else’s face; it was never about that specific person at all. It’s about a need that’s too primal and simplistic to demand another complex, complicated person, who has needs of their own, as its solution. So it’s not that some people are just ~so great~ that they can’t be bothered to reach out to people. It’s that some kinds of need aren’t fair to the other person, and what you want is not something that person can actually give you.

And that’s what I was thinking about as I wrote up that episode, yeah.
