I’m not sure how to describe an entire photoset of an animal with an inscrutable expression, but… suffice it to say that it is a greyish-reddish fox on a scrubby Tibetan plateau (according to my researchings on Wikipedia). But it also has a round, deadpan face with perpetually narrowed eyes. Unlike the Pallas cat, it seems more unamused than grarrly. The Tibetan sand fox is the Daria of foxes.

The question of what the hell Skyfall is supposed to mean (besides the fact that your metalcore band needs a new name now) is addressed indirectly in the opener to this sly, cagily unrevealing teaser to the 23rd James Bond film, as—when presented with the phrase during a word association test—Daniel Craig’s even-testier-than-usual Bond simply declares the session over. The rest of the preview plays like its own abstract game of interpretation, showing only some impressively composed (thanks to cinematographer Roger Deakins) scenes of international intrigue, plus the occasional flash of Craig smirking or Judi Dench looking worried. For those who have lamented the way trailers have increasingly become mini-spoilers, this should be refreshing, reintroducing Craig’s strengths (Steely resolve! Shirtlessness!) while offering just enough to reassure Bond fans over the unconventional choice of director Sam Mendes. And for now, the revelation of the meaning of Skyfall—like the official introduction of Javier Bardem’s villain, glimpsed here only as a shadow—can definitely wait.

I feel like it’s worth reminding the internets that John Sayles once wrote a draft for Jurassic Park IV:

All of that happens by page 39, at which point I realized I had no idea where this thing was going, and I quit trying to guess. It kept confounding my expectations. It certainly didn’t feel like it was just another rehash of the same formula. When Nick wakes up, he’s in the tower of a medieval castle in the Alps. Seriously. That’s the precise moment when the entire enterprise goes so over-the-top loony that you’ll either go along with it for the entire insane ride or reject it roundly as a big bag of ludicrous. Nick is introduced to Adrien Joyce, the major domo henchman of Baron von Drax, CEO of the Grendel Corporation. Joyce isn’t a moustache-twirling bad guy bent on torturing Nick into revealing where he hid the shaving cream can. Instead, he offers Nick a job, and in order to explain the job to him, he has to take him on a tour of the entire castle, which turns out to be a fairly sophisticated genetics lab where Grendel Corporation has been breeding some dinosaurs of their own design, cross-breeds that never existed in any era of nature with all sorts of custom modifications.

On the other hand, Rihanna is actually quite fun as a weapons officer who just really enjoys shooting things. That’s her whole character: She likes to shoot big guns. And with that one characteristic, she feels more real and alive than the other characters, whom we get endless development of. Maybe because this is a movie about shooting things, so Rihanna’s desires and the audience’s are perfectly aligned. In any case, if they make the sequel, it should star Rihanna and the main character conflict should be over her wanting to shoot things, and other people perhaps not wanting her to shoot them.

… I’d watch it.

[“Love to Love You Baby”] was concocted by an Italian record producer and songwriter named Giorgio Moroder, whose partnership with Summer also resulted in the relentless futurist robo-funk of 1977’s “I Feel Love.” The best dance song of the ’70s, if not the greatest dance track of all-time, “I Feel Love” didn’t do as well on the U.S. chart as “Love To Love You Baby” (it peaked at No. 6), but its influence proved to be a lot more lasting. “I have heard the sound of the future,” Brian Eno famously told David Bowie after hearing the song during the making of the duo’s Berlin trilogy, and he was absolutely right: Club music would never be the same after “I Feel Love,” nor would sizeable chunks of rock music. (Anyone who’s ever been called “dance-punk” owes half of everything they own to Summer and Moroder.) While its innovations have been borrowed countless times since, “I Feel Love” still sounds thrilling 35 years later.
